Southwest Cacti
Trips to Tucson and Baja so... plenty of cactus photos.
Colorado River 100
Photos and thoughts from the 2006 Colorado River 100 Canoe/Kayak race. 100 miles in 20 1/2 hours from Bastrop, TX, to Columbus, TX, along the scenic Colorado River. Fun!

Doing the paddle-backwards thing in Whatcom Creek and watching the seals swim out to check out the boat.
Kayak Towing Sailboat
While sailing to Sucia Island with a friend on his West Wight Potter, a light wind opposed a light current near Lummi Island so our ground speed was zero. Until we had the great idea of towing the Potter with the Malibu Two sit-on-top kayak we brought along. For some reason, the motoring sailboats that passed us kept waving and taking pictures.
Climbing Mount Adams
Photos and descriptions of a climb to the summit of Mount Adams in late July.
Ski To Sea 2006
This photo links to the Kayak Wallpaper page since I have several other Ski To Sea photos there. I wasn't planning to race this year since our team decided to take a year off. Our family met with a couple of other families on a nearby boat to watch the kayakers launch, so I took the opportunity to walk around and take kayak photos. That's when the announcer asked for a volunteer to paddle for a kayaker who had just popped his Achilles running from the handoff to his kayak. I walked over and heard myself say, "I think I can," and suddenly found myself taking the PFD from the injured kayaker, grabbing a water bottle from a vendor's table, and grabbing one end of a nice new kayak as we headed for the launch. My friend, Bob, saw me and said, "Does your wife know about this?" She soon learned and was able to work her way through town to the finish to meet me. What heart-pounding fun! And when I subtract the handoff delay it was my best split time yet!
West beach of Lummi Island
Enjoyed a wonderful paddle on our Ocean Kayak Malibu Two up and down the west shore of Lummi Island. Many crabs and jelly fish were visible just off the beach.

Horizon Fairbanks freighter
Moored at the pier at the outlet of Whatcom Creek. Two Foss tugs are visible in the background.
Puget Sounder
This large ship, apparently named the Puget Sounder, was anchored in Bellingham Bay. If anyone has more information on this ship I would be happy to post it.
Lindsey Foss Tractor Tug
According to the Foss web site, this is one of the two largest Enhanced Tractor Tugs in the world. The Lindsey Foss has a Voith Schneider cycloidal propulsion system driven by an 8,000 horsepower engine that can develop full thrust in any direction. It is designed to move very large ships through confined channels using its amazing power and maneuverability. I could see from a mile or so away that the tug was headed toward the pier at the outlet of Whatcom Creek so I paddled closer to Boulevard Park until it passed and then continued my crossing to Little Squalicum Beach.
Schooner Zodiac
The bay was very still this day when the Zodiac, a 127 foot schooner rigged as a two-masted gaff, left the Fairhaven Ferry Terminal moving past a large Coast Guard ship moored there. Information on sailing trips aboard the Zodiac is available at www.schoonerzodiac.com.
This link takes you to a page of Chuckanut Sandstone images, including the image above of two deer on Clark's Point who watched me paddle by.

Building The Pax 18 Kayak
Longer, sleeker, faster. I started building the Chesapeake Light Craft Pax 18 Kit during Christmas break of 2005. At this point we were up to wiring the hull panels. This image will link to an entire series devoted to building the Pax 18.
Dew On Moss At Mount Baker
What could be more Northwest than moss wet with the morning dew? This is a moss-covered tree stump near the base of Mount Baker.
